COMMON SPACE / ESPACIO COMÚN: 10 Years of Practice with Amber Art & Design

October 12 - November 9, 2023 | curated by José Ortiz-Pagán | Icebox Project Space, Philadelphia PA

We built a month-long installation documenting 10 years of our work as an art collective making public art and celebrating community engagement at Icebox, Philly’s best experimental art space! Over 75 visual artists and performers contributed to the show, making it a magical space of reunion and expression. As part of the show we hosted panels, talks, workshops, and collaborative art making. See more about the exhibition here: Mural Arts | The Art Blog | Grid Philly | The 215 on Fox29

March 18 - May 5, 2023 | Fringe Salon, South Philadelphia PA

photos by Snapshot Anderson, Jasmine Dsouza, and Munah Mayo

Have you ever partied in a hair salon? Fringe Salon inspires. A hair salon/event space, this was the perfect cozy spot to come together after the long winter and experience one another’s art. I shared my new drawings, the permafrost is melting alongside a new series of smaller pieces in a solo show at Fringe for the months of March & April 2023, where there is so much light during the day! Singer-songwriter Kayla Saree headlined the opening night by debuting her pieces, High and Low and Silk. We then opened up the night for an open mic of soul-shifting performers. Many thanks to everyone who made this possible and shared their beauty. 💜 🪩🎤

Get in Where You Fit In: An Amber Art & Design Group Show

September 2 - October 7, 2022 | Cherry Street Pier, Philadelphia PA

Thanks to the DWRC, TRFE, the many artists making work there, and Walls for Justice, Cherry Street Pier has been alive!! We set up a group show of paintings and drawings in the shipping containers that have been turned into a public gallery within the pier. Incredible artists host monthly markets, and there are lots of celebrations - the best kind of multi-use public space. We were honored to have the Steadfast Brothers’ Band play on our closing night. 🥁

debut of drawings: the permafrost is melting, amongst the stars, insomnia, and did they cross to the other side?

Many thanks to Breck Built for building custom holders for these drawings.

Within This Vessel & Residency at Studio 1517

September - October 2019, Winter 2020 | Studio 1517, Philadelphia PA

Studio 1517 is the incredible brainchild of artist i am intisar, who created an activated community art space in what was once the famous Pyramid Club, a historical Black social space. She curated artists in residence, openings, performances, and public events from 2018 - 2020. Studio 1517 birthed the best of memories bathing in sound, art, and presence every month in the beautiful space.

I had the honor of being in residence in September 2019, where I collaborated with DJ and sound artist June Lopez on 2 live performances. June composed sound waves to accompany my scroll drawings, which explored bodily memory and the landscapes that live inside all of us. During one of the performances, I read aloud from books of poems and texts that honored the human spirit, with the intention of giving our guests a moment of inner rest and calm. I am deeply grateful for these experiences with Hamilton (i am intisar) and for the friends, family, coworkers, and community who supported these events and experienced them with us.

I also had the joy of starting a weekly residency at 1517 in Winter 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic changed all of our lives forever. Studio 1517 lives on in our memories, and in the documentary produced by i am intisar and Joaquim Hamilton. 💜
